Popover Sundress in blue and green

Miss A will be attending a classmates birthday party tomorrow afternoon. The birthday girl asked Miss A if I could make the present! How could I refuse? Well easily, but I didn’t as I admired the birthday girl’s spunk for asking!
Miss A and I decided a dress was in order. I wanted it to be a quick project as there are so many other things already in the queue and some more pattern testing on the horizon.
The Popover Sundress, a free Oliver + S pattern, bills itself as a good project for a beginner sewist or a quick project that provides almost instant gratification for someone with a bit more experience. It was just what I was looking for, and did I mention it was free?
The pattern is available in sizes 2 – 8. I sewed up a size 6 for a 6 year old!
The blue and green fabrics are light-weight cotton remnants from Amitie Textiles. The gorgeous bias binding was purchased from My Poppet’s online shop. Cinit’s Mum makes makes the bias binding (apparently it’s her super power!) from vintage or quilting fabrics.
Here’s hoping the birthday girl loves her new handmade dress.
Everything about that is delight! To be requested, the making – the lot! Is it just me or do our children appreciate handmade more than our generation did at the same age?
I loathed my homemade clothes as a child. My children consider it the pinnacle of their wardrobe to have a made-by-mum piece!
Or was I a horrid child spoilt for choice because everything, though well made was homemade??
My grandmother was an excellent seamstress, but she died before I was born. She did teach her daughter-in-law (my Mum) to sew, but it wasn’t something Mum enjoyed. I think it was one of those things you did because you were supposed to if you wanted to be a good mother/housewife in the 70s. I therefore only remember Mum making my curtains, our PJs, my library bag (same fabric as the curtains and I still have it!) and some felt lion cushions! My girls both love my handmade things. The littlest says proudly, “it’s Mummy made”.
My children are the same, they boast when they are out wearing clothes made by mum! I’m just finishing up a cardigan for Miss Nearly-8 – it was all she wanted for her birthday – a jacket (knitted) made by mum.
You know I think you are right, my mother was v.practical too she loved to sew but she is very ‘thrift’ and never sewed frivolous gorgeous things. Always practical, she even sewed my undies! Hence I simply cannot make myself stitch underpants or bras – regardless of how many bloggers do it. I had a childhood of practical and sensible. I’m all for enjoying my sewing simply for the process!
Adorable! I believe that you win in the gift giving department!
Not that it’s a competition or anything… 🙂
ahem, no, of course not….
The oliver and S dress is pretty fantastic for quick sewing – it works really well for refashioning old t-shirts too!
Thanks for the t-shirt tip. The birthday girl was very pleased with her present. Her Mum sent me an all smiles photo of her wearing it today.
That makes it super worthwhile!
[…] was my first printed Oliver + S pattern (I recently tried the free downloadable Popover Sundress). I’ve heard so many good things about this […]
Thanks for sharing this Anna, the dress looks adorable and I think the binding gives it the perfect finishing touch. Mum will be super happy when I show her.
