A blank canvas
Long time readers will know that I adore mixing prints and adding design features to my makes. More recently I’ve discovered that creating a blank canvas is as equally rewarding.
A blank canvas allows the fabric, and in this case the colour of this medium weight linen/viscose blend from Darn Cheap Fabrics, to shine. A blank canvas also indulges my other love – accessories!
Others before me have all noted how short Tessuti’s Ruby Dress is. I’m 165cm tall and I chose not to lengthen the dress, but to achieve my preferred length I bound the hem. I actually find binding therapeutic!
Okay, well maybe I did add a little design feature. Quite a restrained one don’t you think?
Like my last Ruby, I top-stitched the opening at the back, and added the binding to the wrong side of the garment, turned to it to the right side and then top-stitched it down. No stitching in the ditch for me!
Pattern: Tessuti’s Ruby Top/Dress
Size: 10
Fabric: Linen/viscose blend from Darn Cheap Fabrics
Alterations: None
Accessories: Liberty Scarf & shoes recently purchased online from Yoox.
Dress looks great, lovely colour and your accessories always add that little extra…
Ria.
Thanks Ria. I must admit as I plan to make things these days I’m already thinking about the accessories that will go with the new item!
I shall refer back to this periodically- when I veer too close to sensory overload dressing!!
You and me both….
Lovely dress–again, you remind me to stick to my style and tastes so that my makes compliment my wardrobe. Love those sandals!
Thanks Sarah Jo. Wedges are definitely my preferred heel… comfortable height!
I love this. It seems to have become your signature silhouette! I recently made a similar linen dress which is as yet unblogged, but I used a Burdastyle pattern.
I’ve made another Ruby since this one, so yes, definitely a signature silhouette for me. Looking forward to seeing you Burda dress Andrea.
You are the master at accessorizing!. What I would give to raid your stash of shoes and necklaces!!
Dare I confess that shoe storage is starting to become an issue!
This is a lovely colour on you. The neckline closure was the perfect detail to add.
Thanks Tammy. I didn’t have a blue button in the stash that complimented the colour of the fabrics, so I used a little contrast button and thread chain!
Gotta love a blank canvas. That blue is gorgeous and your liberty scarf is the perfect accessory. Very stylish outfit.
Thanks Jean Margaret. I must keep reminding myself about this blank canvas caper as I get carried away with print matching…
I always love checking out your shoes! Another great dress which seems to perfectly capture your style.
To think I only own half a dozen shoes two years ago, a handful of scarfs, two hand bags and no beads… I’ve come a long way in the accessorising department.
Do I need a blank canvas? I’m not sure I can afford the quality this would be best achieved with. My prints are all cheap and cheerful, a bit like me LOL! But this is really lovely, the colour is gorgeous on you.
You’re hilarious Jillian!
Perfect example of when simple is best, I must remember “a blank canvas”! Love the bright colour and your scarf accessory.
Thanks Erin. Wishing our Melbourne weather would warm up so I can wear all my new summery clothes. P.S. I love my Liberty scarf too… I’m hoping it will be passed down to my girls when I’m done with it (in many many many years to come).
Your frock- I swoon!
And those shoes- I need!
Everyone needs these shoes… Wedges are my kinda footwear… comfortable height!
I was going to comment on the dress but I’ve been side-swiped by the shoes. I want them!
The shoes are a favourite of mine too. Surprisingly they are really comfortable. I love wedges!
Beautiful stitching, Anna – love the binding close up 🙂
Thanks Mel. That means a lot to me.
The dress is gorgeous. Love how you styled it for the shoot.
Thanks Jenya. Blog photo shoots with my best friend are lots of fun. I’m at the point when I’m choosing fabric and a pattern to make I’m already planning accessories and thinking about the photo shoot.
So pretty! And coincidentally, yesterday I was contemplating some solid tent dresses for spring. I sew prints almost exclusively – I need a breather. I love the Ruby from Tessuti, but the cost was a bit high from the States. I found a similar dress, the Gabby, and have a great TNT now. Love your royal blue, calm, and peaceful dress and cute accessories!
Thanks Coco. Now I just need our weather to warm up so that I can wear it and my other Ruby Dress (photographed but not yet blogged!).
Very pretty, great description too
🙂
Beautiful colour! and beautiful scenery too!
This beautiful spot by the Yarra River in Melbourne is only 10mins from my house and I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t even know it was there. I love finding new places to explore not far from home…. That is when I’m not sewing!
Looks great Anna and I agree plain fabric allows fun with accessories, love the photo shoot setting.
Lyn
Thanks Lyn. And thanks for the email chat. Stay in touch and enjoy your time in Victoria.
LOVE that colour. I’m a big fan of keeping it simple so two thumbs up from over here!
Received loud and clear. Thanks Shelley 🙂
