Spot on

Let’s play a game. Can you guess the pattern and the fabric?
Did you guess Megan Nielson’s Eucalpyt Woven Dress ? I’ve sewn it up in a voile from Sew Caroline’s Gleeful Range titled After the Rain in Navy. Since we are talking fabric, I love spots as much as stripes, but irregular sized and located spots are full of all sorts of awesomeness. And in my books the fabric is not navy, as the name suggests, but it is a winning shade of blue. Just one point to note, the fabric is a little sheer. I’m wearing a white cotton slip in these photos.
Now back to the pattern… I pattern tested the Eucalpyt Woven Tank Top & Dress 18 month ago and I think it’s a great example of how much I’ve learnt recently about fitting. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that dress, but my attempts to resolve some fitting problems was to pinch out excess fabric and in the end I over-fitted the garment and it was to tight across my bust. Aren’t hindsight, a Liberty scarf and a yellow external blind all wonderful things?
A year and a half down the track I re-traced the pattern and completed a dartless FBA (just like I do on my Scouts) and made a High Round Back adjustment as per page 122 & 123 of ‘Fit For Real People’ by Pati Palmer & Marta Alto. The High Round Back adjustment stops the back necklines from gaping. As the book explains… “This is a computer-generation alteration. With so much close work, our shoulders move forward and our upper back gets rounded”.
My only photo of the back of the dress doesn’t include the neckline, so you’re just going to have to trust me that it sits flat. Instead, how about you admire the curved hemline which has been drafted to be is slightly shorter at the front than the back. Even if fashion has moved on, I love a high-low hem and I’ll continue to wear them!
I don’t think this is the last time that you’ll see this pattern on my blog, and it definitely won’t be the last time you see this fabric as there is a couple more metres in the stash!

I love this Anna – you look fab and that photographer of yours is worth the wait!
She’s a gem! Warm weather is forecast in Melbourne tomorrow so the dress will get it’s first full day wear. Fingers crossed it passes the test!
Anna, this is another wonderful make (and another wonderful styling and photography session – I need your photographer)! Looks fantastic. I want your wardrobe!
Thanks Lara. Everyone needs Sharon to photograph their makes… but she’s all mine!
This is lovely, again! – I’ve pulled my Eucalyptus from the pattern stash this summer as well – I can finally do the yellow flowers fabric that came in the kit justice (I hope!).
And I’m loving all of your photoshoots – they’re so vibrant!! 😉
I’m thinking of a colour or patterned blocked version next! Photographing my makes is lots of fun with my friend behind the camera. Laughing seems to be the best way of making me relax.
Great photos and a very lovely dress. I love the fit, exactly what I would want to wear in summer.
After wearing this dress today Louise I am scheming about making more… As you said, it’s perfect for summer days and it’s already hot here in Melbourne and it’s only spring-time!
Oh wow! This is stunning! Also, more fruit in photos, please!!!
More fruit… absolutely!
I was just thinking how perfect this will be when the weather heats up. Very elegant. hope it was as comfy as it looks. you could probably wear it again tomorrow!
So comfy Shelley. In fact, I was thinking that I might use this pattern to make some summer nighties.
Anna, this dress looks so comfy! Love the fabric! I had some very similar vintage cotton left from my grandma I cut up to make a little dress for my daughter when I first started sewing. I think seeing this print will always make me think of my Grandma 🙂
