Scooters are the best

This scooter dress has been a long time in the making.
Back in April 2012 I pattern tested You Sew Girl’s Best Dress. It was the early days in my sewing career and my first zip and button-holes (you always remember those firsts don’t you?). I was so pleased with myself when the dress was finished, and a much younger Miss A (see below) loved it too. The dress is still in her wardrobe and still being worn!
Straight after this version was finished, I cut out another, only to realise that I didn’t quite have enough fabric for the gathered skirt. The project was put aside. Many months later a piece of the same fabric (part of the Sherbet Pips range by Aneela Hoey for Moda) in the grey colourway appeared in the remnants section of Kelani’s website. Hooray, the dress would be saved!
The Best Dress pattern says, “This is one for girls who want to wear pretty dresses. It’s practical, comfortable and twirly, yet it’s also suitable for formal occasions. The sleeve, bodice, skirt and belt (at the back) each have two interchangeable variations, so you’ll be able to make a dress for every special occasion and even more just for fun!”
I selected the non-pleated bodice, gathered sleeves, gathered skirt and buttoned belt. This dress was completed at Sewjourn (thanks for the buttons Lara) and it was a pleasure to sew. Nikki’s drafting and instructions are first class!
And now for some hula hooping…
And to finish, some action shots of my girls who are currently the very best of friends (fingers crossed it lasts) at a local park. We often enjoy an after dinner play at the park in summer as you don’t have to worry about hats and sunscreen.

What a great dress and I love the two colorways! I need to sew with wovens again. I’m pleased with my knit projects but my sewing skills aren’t growing (maybe they’re digressing since some of the details you listed have me pause!).
Thanks Sarah Jo. It was nice to re-make a pattern that I hadn’t sewn since I was a beginner. It helped me to see how far I’ve come in 20 months. I like chopping and changing between knit and woven projects so that I can appreciate the good and the bad about both types of fabrics!
