A sunki dress on the go…
A long, long, long time ago, I brought some gorgeous Japanese cotton from Tessuti and the pattern for Figgy’s Sunki Dress, with the view of making Miss A a stylish new frock (like below).
It’s been one of those project that’s been sitting and waiting patiently. Well, that was until yesterday, when I attended a social sewing class at the Handmaker’s Factory. Sunki was my project of choice, as I could foresee needing help (thanks for your assistance and reassurance Nicola!).
It was a great four hours, of sewing and chatting…
watching a printing making demonstration…
and purchasing a porcelain ring!
The Handmaker’s Factory share studio space with Ink & Spindle, who design and produce ethical, sustainable & organic textiles. Ink & Spindle hosted an open studio yesterday, and as I was fusing interfacing, I watched a print making demonstration and listened to Tegan and Lara’s detailed explanation of the process. It was fascinating and I just love the fabric they printed yesterday.
The fabric was a custom colour print run, but other designs and colourways can be purchased in Ink & Spindle’s online shop.
Abby Seymour, who also shares the studio space, had lots of ‘wares’ on sale too. The ring pictured above was a perfect fit for my finger and my current love of orange and yellow, so it came home with me! Interested in seeing more of Abby’s work? Her online shop is here.
What a fun and inspiring day!
I love that house fabric. I bought the last fat quarter of black on grey a while ago, but I’ve no idea what to do with it! A’s new frock looks like it’s going to be a ripper, too.
Meanwhile, Elsa finally has an article of mum-made clothing! I whipped up a pair of PJ pants yesterday, complete with French seams! Not too over the top…
I just need to sew the elastic casing on a fitted sheet for her and project #2 is done too. A few more miniature projects and I might tackle a Laurel!
I have a some Ink & Spindle remnants too. I think they’ll be turned into little purses one day! Lucky Elsa, and French seams, that is fancy! You’ll need your own blog soon…
Stand by…!
I can’t wait to see the dress made up!
Hopefully not too much longer to wait, although I am easily distracted!
Ohhhhh 😉 What a wonderful day!!! I adore Ink & Spindle, we have a selection as our cushions & I am still waiting to decide a project worthy of the spare bits 😉 I can’t wait to see your finished sunki!
It was a wonderful day, and then I came home and started and finished another totally different sewing project. More on that later…
Sounds like a wonderful day out! I love the printed fabric, is that linen? The ring is gorgeous too.
Ink & Spindle use organic cotton and hemp blend fabrics. Some are classified as apparel weight if you fancy making some clothes. And to top off a lovely day yesterday, I’m just home from dinner with some Melbourne sewing blogging buddies! Eating, sharing a bottle of champers and talking sewing – the good life!
