True blue
Did you know that the old saying ‘you can’t judge a book by it’s cover’ applies to sewing patterns too?
The artwork for Butterick 5948 isn’t particularly inspiring, but if you’re after a slightly drop shouldered boxy top/tee the drafting is great and the pattern options plentiful. A big thank-you to Shivani for alerting me to B5948 when she shared her stunning metallic double gauze version on Instagram a few months ago.
I sewed View F (sans pocket) as I was after a short sleeved top and I wanted to avoid the pattern variation with the keyhole closure and button/loop (ie. View C). Keyhole closures and I have a history of not getting along!
Suggested fabrics for this pattern are… lightweight faille, lightweight crepe, lightweight broadcloth, stable knits and challis. I went down the stable knits route and I sewed this tee in a denim-look cotton loop-backed french terry from The Cloth Shop. I added a neckband for a slightly more sporty look.
The demin-look french terry was leftover from the StyleArc Josie Hoodie (unblogged but you can see a quick snap on Instagram) that I sewed at the end of July. This fabric is a whopping 190cm wide (hence two project from the one cut), the quality is excellent and although I’m not usually much of a blue girl, I want to sew all the things from it. Yes, it’s that good!
As this pattern is designed to be sewn from wovens as well as stable knits, I knew that the hems wouldn’t require the ability to stretch. I therefore overlocked the raw hem edges, folded them up once and secured them with a straight stitch.
As well as leaving off the pocket and adding an neckband, I made a 3/8″ (1cm) forward shoulder adjustment and removed 3″ (8cm) from the length. View F is designed to be more long-line than suits my current atheistic.
This tee, my rust Falda Jacket, a pair of jeans, a silk scarf and some stylish walking shoes and I feel like I’m ready to see the world… which is lucky as I’m packing these items for an upcoming overseas family holiday!

Thanks for your kind words Janet… I’m blushing 😊
Oh man–Butterick! Those pattern envelopes leave much to be desired. Thank goodness for the Internet and the creative people who can see beyond the artwork to uncover a gem! I love an updated basic top. Bon voyage!
Our sewing community is the best Sarah Jo. There is usually someone at the ready to share their knowledge.
i love this Anna! Ohhh if I manage to get my hands on this one (in my country big 4 patterns are not that easy to find) I would definitely give it a try!
Sasha when I’m back from my holiday I’ll track a copy down and send it your way. Happy to include a few other patterns too. Just DM me your wish list.
