Windswept in Maya
If you do an internet and/or Instagram search you’ll see that Marilla Walker’s Maya Dress/Top has been sewn and adored by many.
This red chambray version was a toile (from a 65cm remnant) and I have to confess I really didn’t do the pattern justice.
Why not you ask?
Firstly, I didn’t have enough fabric for facings so I just bound the neckline, sleeves and hem with some leftover bias binding I had in my stash. It feels very wrong to use binding when such lovely facings were on offer. I also think the stitch lines from the facings elevate the finished garment. Lesson learnt.
Secondly, I incorrectly made a decision to size down. The resulting top doesn’t give me the required arm movement for everyday mum activities. Rookie mistake.
So rather than dwell on this time, let’s look at what I would do next time:
- Follow the size chart and make a version true to my measurements
- Add a little bit of length to the top to negate my slightly long torso
- Use the facings as per the pattern.
Pattern: Marilla Walker’s Maya Dress/Top
Size: 3
Fabric: Red chambray remnant from Cleggs in the city (yes, it has been in my stash for many years!)
Alterations: 3/8″ (1cm) forward shoulder adjustment. Eliminated facings and bound neckline, sleeves and hem with bias binding.
Outfit: Jeans from Witchery, Liberty silk scarf and boots from Obus (last season).
Photo Location: Eastern suburbs, Melbourne
It’s a really cute top! I do hope you make it again and enjoy it.
Thanks for sharing your Maya top. I love the fabric choice..but I noticed you’re wearing a scarf..Is that to cover the neckline which I thought was a bit high when I made mine.?
Also i noted your comments re facings..I used them and hand stitched them down, but rather wish I’d put bias bindings! ( I didn’t really understand your comments about why you prefer facings..If you get time would you mind explaining that please?
Many thanks again for your inspirational posts
Best wishes
Dru
Yes, the neckline is a touch high but I was wearing a scarf as I love to accessorise! I usually machine stitch facings down & I like the stitch mines created by this on a simple top. I hope that clears things up.
Very clear description, I have made two Maya tops and know exactly what you mean. Your site is one of a very few I have kept subscribing to because you are clear, honest and funny. It is only the local references I don’t get because I live on Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada
Catharine your lovely feedback made my day! Thank-you.
