Joining the puff sleeve party

The lovely lady behind newish Western Australian pattern company called NAMEthelabel is a friend of a friends.  Industry trained, but keen to bring her patterns and knowledge to home sewists, Ainslie has released 5 patterns in the last twelve month and sewn & sold more masks than she cares to recall.

I’ve tested both the T Shirt Dress, the Cafe Tee and the Puff Sleeve Pullover.  It’s the latter that I’m going to talk about today.  I’ve happily joined the puff sleeve party!

The pullover is sewn from a combination of sweat shirting fabric (in this case a 100% cotton french terry from The Cloth Shop [sold out]) and ribbing for the lower sleeve and neckband.

If you promise not to laugh, I will confess that I needed a little lesson on how to wear this pullover.

When you pop the pullover on, the sleeves feel very long and the upper sleeve can be a little droopy.

For full volume, hoick those sleeves up and let the box pleat above the ribbing hold that puff in place.

Aahhh… much better!

I did make a few changes to the pattern including my usual forward shoulder adjustment and shortening at the hem by 1 1/2″ (3.75cm).  I also slightly lowered the front neckline (personal preference) and performed my first hollow chest adjustment to remove excess ease in the front neckline as experienced on my toile.  I used the second hollow chest method suggested on Phat Chick Design’s blog, but because it was jersey I didn’t add a dart, instead I just eased the excess fabric into the side seam.

These photos were taken at the back on the Fletcher Jones Factory in Warrnambool in early July.  Can you see the FJ logo in the above photo?  The factory and gardens were created in 1948.  The site is no longer operational, but it’s now on the Victorian Heritage Register.

And to finish… some scarf throwing fun!
