Never a dull coat

As the story often goes… the Berlin Jacket by Tessuti wasn’t on my radar and then I tried on Jane’s version and it quickly moved to the top of my ‘to sew’ list.  It was a total queue jumper.

I purchased this gorgeous orange boiled wool from The Drapery last year with the view to making a short lined jacket.  When it arrived it was so divine, I instantly ordered a second piece so that I could make a long jacket.

Initially, I had the fabric earmarked for a Japanese pattern, but after lots of deliberation the Berlin was triumphant.  It was totally the right decision.

The Berlin Jacket is a great pattern:

  •  It is relatively quick to sew as the seams don’t require finishing and there are no fastenings
  •  The construction is just like Tessuti’s Sydney Jacket (ie. the seams are overlapped).
  •  The fit is great
  •  It is easy to wear… more like a cardigan than a jacket

The jacket is designed so the that sleeves are rolled up to reveal the sleeve facings.  My preference was to wear the sleeves long, so I removed 3/8 inch (1cm) from the sleeve length before adding the cuffs.

The other minor change I made to the pattern was to raised the pockets by 1 inch (2.5cm).  As I’m a little short in the arm department, I might raise them a touch more if I were to make this again.

Now this isn’t a jacket for the depths of Melbourne’s winter (I learnt that the hard way today), but it sure is a great addition to my wardrobe and I can’t help but feel cheery when I put it on.
