I need a pencil case for school Mummy…

Miss A said this morning, “I need a pencil case for school Mummy.”  My mind then flashed back to late last year when I was filling out her book list and decided that we didn’t need to buy a pencil case, as I could make one.  I thought it would be a good summer holiday sewing project for the girlie and I.  Fast forward all of the summer holidays and into the first week of school, and I had totally forgotten all about it… Oooppphhhss!

Miss A had a rummage through my ‘larger scraps’ bag this morning and selected two fabrics (both left over from recent Woven Scout Tees).  To elevate some of my ‘Mummy’s forgotten’ guilt, I  promised I would have a pencil case ready for her to take to school tomorrow.  And I do!

The main fabric was a cotton voile, so I put my new bag making skills to work and added interfacing and fusible fleece, which gives the pencil case great structure.

For the pattern I used a printed version of You Sew Girl’s Make-Up Purse (now available for purchase as a download).  I ‘slashed and spread’ the pattern to add length.  A pencil case has to be able to fit pencils in it!  It also meant I could use a yellow zip which I had lurking in my stash …not quite sure how that one got there.

I smile every-time I open the zip and see the Liberty lining. I hope Miss A does too.
